> CAGR(연평균 복리 성장률)은 주어진 기간에 시작값을 종료값으로 만들어주는 일정한 연간 비율입니다. 기하평균이므로 연도별 수익률의 단순 평균과 다릅니다. +50%인 해 뒤에 −50%인 해가 오면 산술평균은 0%지만 CAGR은 −13.4%이며, 계좌가 실제로 겪은 것은 후자입니다.

## 계산 방법

## 계산 예시

1만 달러가 10년 뒤 26,533달러로 → (26,533 ÷ 10,000)^(1/10) − 1 = CAGR 10.3%.

## 손실도 복리로 작동하기에 기하평균

산술평균은 숫자의 집합을, 기하평균은 그 사이를 지나는 경로를 설명합니다. 각 해의 수익률은 전년이 남긴 잔고에 적용되므로, 큰 손실은 이후 모든 복리가 올라탈 기반을 영구히 줄입니다. CAGR은 이것을 담아내지만 연간 퍼센트의 평균은 담지 못합니다.

## 과정에 대해서는 아무 말도 하지 않는다

CAGR이 똑같이 20%인 두 전략이라도 최대 낙폭은 세 배, 회복 기간은 몇 년 차이가 날 수 있습니다. CAGR은 양 끝점의 요약이며 그 사이의 모든 것에 눈을 감습니다. 그런데 전략을 버틸 수 있는지 결정하는 것은 바로 그 사이 구간입니다.

## 흔한 오해

CAGR은 기간 중 입금이 있었던 계좌에 대해서도 자주 인용되는데, 이는 저축을 조용히 투자 수익으로 계산하는 것입니다. 적립으로 인한 성장과 성과로 인한 성장은 다른 주장이며, 둘을 합치면 납입한 만큼 수치가 부풀려집니다.
